A little soreness after your braces are tightened is normal. Everyone’s mouth is different, but most people feel only a mild, achy pressure that fades within a day or two, and the longer you are in braces, the faster that discomfort tends to resolve after each visit. Here are simple ways to feel better in the meantime, from Dr. Amir Davoody at Davoody & Hablinski Orthodontics.

Stick to soft foods

Soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, and applesauce are easy on tender teeth. They are a great choice for the first couple of days after you get braces, and again on the day of each tightening.

Use your wax

Your orthodontist’s wax exists for a reason. Cover any bracket or hook that is rubbing, and do not be stingy with it. If you run out, just ask us for more.

Over-the-counter relief

Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve) can ease discomfort. Follow the directions on the label or check with your physician for safe dosing. If they are not helping, contact our office and we will suggest other options.

Keep your hands away

As tempting as it is, do not pick at your braces. Playing with the hardware can damage it and extend your treatment. If something is bothering you, schedule a quick visit and we will take care of it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does soreness last after a tightening? Usually a day or two, and it tends to ease faster the longer you have had braces.

What can I take for the pain? An over-the-counter reliever like ibuprofen or naproxen, used as directed.

Is soreness a sign something is wrong? No, mild pressure is expected. Sharp pain or a broken part is worth a call.
