Elastics, also called rubber bands, are a normal and important part of braces treatment. They help guide your teeth and jaws into their proper positions, and wearing them as instructed is one of the biggest factors in finishing your treatment correctly and on time. Here Dr. Amir Davoody at Davoody & Hablinski Orthodontics in Houston, TX explains why they matter.

What do elastics actually do?

Brackets and wires straighten your teeth, but elastics do something brackets alone cannot: they correct how your upper and lower jaws fit together. By applying gentle, directed force between the top and bottom teeth, elastics improve your bite and alignment. Because you put them in and take them out yourself, they are also the part of treatment most dependent on you.

How long should you wear elastics each day?

In most cases, elastics are worn about 20 to 22 hours a day and removed only to eat, brush, and floss. They lose their stretch over time, so plan to change them for fresh ones roughly three times a day. Wearing fresh bands consistently keeps steady, healthy force on your teeth.

What happens if you skip them?

Inconsistent wear is the most common reason treatment runs long. Skipping elastics can prolong your overall timeline and affect the final result, and it actually extends the soreness you feel while adjusting to them, because your teeth never fully settle into the new force. Steady wear is more comfortable in the long run than an on-and-off routine.

Tips for wearing elastics

  • Carry extra rubber bands so you are ready if one breaks.
  • Never double up unless your orthodontist tells you to; more force is not faster and can harm tooth movement.
  • Before you leave the office, make sure you know exactly where and when to hook your bands.
  • Keep a small bag of elastics in your backpack, car, or desk.

Frequently asked questions

Are elastics really necessary? For cases that need bite correction, yes. They do work that brackets and wires cannot do alone.

How long until I can stop? That depends on your bite. Dr. Davoody will tell you when your alignment has reached its goal.

Does doubling up speed things up? No. Doubling can apply unhealthy force; only do it if specifically instructed.
