Eating Tips to Protect Your Orthodontic Treatment

Reviewed by Dr. Amir Davoody, board-certified orthodontist (ABO Diplomate).

Starting orthodontic treatment is a big investment in your smile, and what you eat every day makes a real difference in how smoothly it goes. At Davoody & Hablinski Orthodontics in Houston, TX, Dr. Amir Davoody and our team want to help you protect your braces and stay comfortable on the way to a straighter smile.

What foods should I avoid?

Foods that are hard, sticky, or crunchy can damage braces and slow your progress.

Hard foods put pressure on brackets and wires and can pop a bracket or bend a wire: nuts, hard pretzels, raw carrots, corn chips, ice, and hard-crust breads.

Sticky foods cling to hardware and can pull it loose while trapping plaque: chewing gum, caramel, taffy, gummy candy, and toffee.

Crunchy foods can snap wires and shift brackets: popcorn, chips, granola, and crunchy tacos. If you love crunch, try softer alternatives like baked chips.

Which habits should I avoid?

Some everyday habits slow treatment too. Avoid chewing on pens, pencils, fingernails, or bottle caps; they are harder than they look and can break hardware. Skip biting into firm foods with your front teeth, and cut fruits and vegetables into small slices instead. And keep up your hygiene: poor brushing and flossing can cause white spots, cavities, and gum swelling that extend treatment. For more, see our braces care guide.

Safe vs unsafe foods

| Food type | Safe options | Foods to avoid |
| — | — | — |
| Fruits | Bananas, berries, melon | Whole apples, pears |
| Vegetables | Steamed veggies, mashed potatoes | Raw carrots, corn on the cob |
| Snacks | Yogurt, pudding, soft granola bars | Popcorn, hard chips |
| Proteins | Meatballs, shredded chicken, fish | Beef jerky, ribs |
| Treats | Ice cream without nuts, soft cookies | Caramel, gum, taffy |

What should I eat right after getting braces?

For the first week and after adjustments, soft foods keep pressure off your braces: smoothies, soups, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soft pasta, and oatmeal.

Can I still enjoy my favorite foods?

In most cases, yes, with small changes. Slice apples instead of biting them, break chocolate into small pieces, cut corn off the cob, and cut chewy meats into smaller bites.

Frequently asked questions

What can I eat the first few days? Stick to soft foods like smoothies, soup, eggs, and pasta until soreness fades.

Are popcorn and gum really off-limits? Yes. Popcorn kernels and sticky gum are two of the most common causes of broken brackets.

Do food choices affect how long treatment takes? They can. Broken hardware means extra visits and possible delays.
