Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontics
Initial Visit
Do you charge for an initial visit?
No, we offer a complimentary initial visit for all new patients. This includes a free orthodontic evaluation as a courtesy to both you and your general dentist. If X-rays or other diagnostic services are needed, a small co-pay may apply.
At what age do you start seeing patients?
We begin seeing children around age 7, in line with the American Association of Orthodontists’ recommendation for early evaluation.
Why do you evaluate patients so young during an early braces for kids visit?
Early orthodontic evaluations are mostly observational. They allow us to monitor development and detect issues before they become more serious. Most of the time, treatment isn’t needed right away, but early insight helps us plan effectively.
How long will the first visit take, and is the orthodontist consultation included?
Your first visit typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. During that time, we may complete a visual exam and, if needed, take records. The orthodontist will review everything with you and outline potential treatment options.
Do you take patients transferring from out of town?
Yes! We’re happy to help transfer patients get back on track. We’ll assess your current progress and create a customized treatment plan—no large upfront fees. Monthly payment arrangements are available.
Do you have any adult braces patients in your practice?
Absolutely. Adult orthodontics is very common, especially with modern, discreet options like Invisalign and clear braces.
What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist, and who should I see for teeth alignment?
Orthodontists are dental specialists with additional years of training focused on aligning teeth and correcting jaw positions. For teeth alignment, including braces or Invisalign, it’s best to consult with an orthodontist.
Can I make all my appointments in the afternoon after school and late in the day?
We do our best to accommodate busy schedules. While some procedures require mid-day availability (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), we reserve early morning and late afternoon appointments for quick check-ins and follow-ups when possible.
Do you see patients for emergencies?
Yes. If you’re experiencing an orthodontic emergency, please call us. Emergency instructions can also be found on our voicemail and website.
Financial & Insurance
Can we make payments for affordable braces and Invisalign over time?
Yes. We offer flexible, interest-free financing options so you can manage the cost of treatment with ease.
How do you handle insurance, especially when planning for the cost of braces or Invisalign cost?
We’ll verify your insurance benefits and bill your provider directly. If your coverage changes or is canceled, the full treatment balance will still be your responsibility.
Do you accept credit card payments?
Yes, we accept major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.
Do you have a direct debit option?
Yes. You can set up recurring payments through bank draft, credit card, or online billing platforms.
Do you charge interest?
No. All of our in-office payment plans are interest-free.
Do you give family orthodontist discounts for multiple family members?
Yes. We offer multi-family member discounts to make treatment more accessible for everyone in your household.
Types of Orthodontic Treatment
What is Phase 1 Treatment and how does it help with early pediatric orthodontist needs?
Phase 1 orthodontics usually starts while baby teeth are still present. It helps correct jaw alignment, spacing, or bite concerns early, potentially preventing more complex issues later. It often lays the groundwork for Phase 2 treatment.
What is Phase 2 Treatment, and how does it compare to braces vs Invisalign for teens?
Phase 2 typically begins when all permanent teeth are in place and focuses on final alignment. Treatment lasts about 18–24 months using either traditional braces or Invisalign, depending on the teen’s needs.
How do I know two-phase treatment is the right teeth straightening for teenagers?
Every teen is different. We recommend two-phase treatment only when it’s necessary for long-term success. A consultation and full diagnostic evaluation will determine the best course of action.
Moving of Teeth (Mechanics)
I need to be pre-medicated for the dentist. Do I need to take my medicine for the orthodontist?
Possibly. Check with your physician or orthodontist beforehand to see if pre-medication is necessary for your procedure.
How long do braces take, and what is the typical orthodontic treatment timeline?
Most orthodontic treatments take around two years, but the timeline varies based on each patient’s needs and case complexity.
How do teeth straightening options actually move your teeth into place?
Orthodontic appliances like braces and aligners apply gentle, consistent pressure that gradually guides teeth into their ideal positions. Your orthodontist will carefully plan the sequence for safe, predictable movement.
Do you use recycled braces?
No. We use only brand-new orthodontic appliances for every patient to ensure hygiene and performance.
Orthodontic Retainers
Do retainers after braces or Invisalign need to be worn long-term?
Yes. Retainers are worn full-time at first, then nightly to maintain alignment. Long-term wear is essential to keep your results stable.
Why do teeth get crooked after wearing braces or clear aligners?
Teeth can shift back over time without proper retainer use. Consistent wear helps prevent relapse and protects your investment.
How about retainers glued to the backs of teeth?
These are called bonded retainers and are typically placed on the back of the lower front teeth. They stay in place long-term and require good hygiene and regular checkups.
Wisdom Teeth (Third Molars)
Do wisdom teeth cause teeth to get crooked?
There’s no conclusive evidence that wisdom teeth cause crowding. Other factors typically play a bigger role in post-treatment movement.
Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed before or after jaw alignment treatment?
Impacted or poorly positioned wisdom teeth can lead to infections or gum problems. In many cases, removal is a preventive step to protect long-term oral health.
When is a good time to have wisdom teeth removed?
The best time is typically between ages 16 and 18, once about two-thirds of the roots have developed. Your orthodontist or oral surgeon will advise based on X-rays.
Temporomandibular Disorders (TMJ)
Can braces or orthodontic treatment treat or cause TMJ problems?
There’s no definitive connection between braces and TMJ disorders. These issues can occur with or without orthodontic treatment.
Health Impact
What are the health benefits of wearing clear braces for adults or teens?
Straight teeth make it easier to maintain good hygiene, which helps prevent cavities and gum disease. Orthodontics also improves chewing, bite balance, and overall facial harmony.
How do enlarged adenoids and allergies affect braces?
Chronic mouth breathing from allergies or enlarged adenoids can impact jaw growth and contribute to bite issues like crowding or overbites.
How does a tongue thrust or low tongue posture affect braces?
A tongue that pushes against the front teeth can disrupt alignment and spacing. Addressing tongue posture can enhance your orthodontic outcome.
