Getting braces is an exciting step toward a better smile, but the first few days can feel strange. A little nervousness is normal. Here Dr. Amir Davoody at Davoody & Hablinski Orthodontics in Houston, TX explains what to expect during the adjustment period and how to stay comfortable.

Tooth sensitivity and soreness

After your braces go on, your teeth may feel tender because your mouth is adjusting to gentle, steady pressure. You might also notice some soreness around your gums and jaw. This is temporary and usually eases within several days. Soft foods like yogurt, smoothies, eggs, pasta, and soup are easier during this period, and an over-the-counter pain reliever can help if your orthodontist approves it.

Mouth sores and irritation

It is common for the brackets to rub against your cheeks and lips at first, which can cause small sores. To soothe them, rinse with warm saltwater. Orthodontic wax also helps: roll a small piece into a ball and press it over any bracket that is bothering you. As your mouth toughens to the braces, the sores typically stop appearing.

Changes in talking and eating

Speaking may feel a little different for the first few days while your mouth adapts, and this passes quickly. Eating takes some adjustment too, since braces can catch food. Keep up with brushing and flossing after meals to stay clean and comfortable, and cut firm foods into smaller pieces.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the soreness last? Most patients feel best within three to five days as the mouth adjusts.

What helps the discomfort? Soft foods, warm saltwater rinses, orthodontic wax, and an approved over-the-counter pain reliever.

Is it normal for my lips and cheeks to feel raw? Yes, briefly. Wax protects the spots that rub until your mouth adapts.
