Will Orthodontic Treatment Affect My Speech?
Reviewed by Dr. Amir Davoody, board-certified orthodontist (ABO Diplomate).
Orthodontic treatment improves how your teeth and jaws align, but many patients wonder whether it will temporarily change their speech. Whether you are considering braces or Invisalign, it is natural to ask. The short version: most changes are mild and temporary, and clear speech returns quickly with a little practice.
Can braces cause speech changes?
Yes, traditional braces can slightly change how some sounds are pronounced because they alter the space and position of the tongue, which can affect sounds like “s,” “t,” or “th.” Most people adjust and speak clearly again within a few weeks.
How does Invisalign affect speech?
Because the aligners cover the teeth, some patients notice a slight lisp at first. With consistent wear and practice, the tongue and lips adapt and speech usually returns to normal within a few days to a couple of weeks.
Tips to adjust your speech
| Tip | How it helps |
| — | — |
| Read aloud | Trains the tongue and lips to adapt to the appliance |
| Speak slowly | Reduces slurring while you adjust |
| Repeat tricky sounds | Focus on “s,” “t,” “th,” and “sh” |
| Use a mirror | Watching tongue and lip movement helps correct errors |
| Keep appliances clean | Prevents irritation that can affect pronunciation |
How long do speech changes last?
Most patients adjust within one to three weeks. Younger children may take a little longer because their mouths are still developing. If changes persist beyond a few weeks, your orthodontist can offer targeted tips or exercises.
Can treatment permanently affect speech?
Permanent changes are very rare. Properly fitted braces and aligners are designed to correct teeth and jaw position without a long-term effect on speech. Temporary adjustment is normal and expected.
