Having metal in your mouth does not always feel natural at first, but after your braces go on and you have your initial adjustment, most people stop noticing them. Then, every so often, a wire slips and reminds you they are there. A loose or poking wire is the most common issue people run into during treatment, and you can usually ease it at home until your next visit. Here are a few steps from Dr. Amir Davoody at Davoody & Hablinski Orthodontics.
1. Try to guide it back into place
If a wire has only pulled loose a little, it may not be fully out of the bracket. You can often use a clean finger to nudge it back into position, or guide the wire back into its tube.
2. Wax it
Wax is your best friend in braces. Place a small piece over the poking wire to ease the discomfort until you can come in for a professional fix.
3. Tuck the sharp end away
You can gently curve the wire so it rests against your gums or teeth instead of poking. Use clean tweezers to carefully nudge it where you want it, so the sharp end is no longer exposed.
If none of these work, or you are not comfortable trying them, do not hesitate to call us. We are happy to talk you through it or get you scheduled. These appointments are usually quick, and we leave room in our day for them.
Frequently asked questions
Is a poking wire an emergency? Usually not. Tuck it flush and cover it with wax, then call to schedule a quick fix.
Can I cut the wire myself? Only as a last resort and after calling our office first; sterilized clippers can trim a long, detached wire, but it is safer to let us handle it.
How soon can I be seen? Wire fixes are short, and we keep time open for them, so we can usually see you quickly.
