After months or years of braces, patients are thrilled to finish treatment. To make sure the smile you leave with stays with you, you will be fitted for a retainer. Retainers prevent relapse and keep the movements your orthodontist made in place. Here are answers to the questions we hear most.
What is a retainer?
After braces, your orthodontist makes a retainer to keep your teeth stable and straight into the future. It is essential because during treatment the jaw and surrounding bone are shifted, and retention is the best way to prevent your teeth from relapsing once braces come off.
What types of retainers are there?
The three most common types are:
- Hawley retainers: metal and acrylic, adjustable and very durable, though more visible and a little firmer.
- Clear retainers: thin plastic that is nearly invisible and comfortable, but less durable and replaced more often.
- Clear aligner-style retainers: molded clear plastic that is comfortable and discreet, usually the most expensive option.
How long do I wear it?
Wear your retainer as much as possible at first, both day and night for the first few months, taking it out only to eat, drink, or play sports. Your orthodontist will tell you when to switch to nights only, and eventually a few nights a week, once the bone has solidified and relapse risk drops. Clean it nightly with toothpaste and cool water, or soak it in a denture cleaner for a deeper clean, and keep it away from hot water that can warp it. One tip: pets love to chew removable retainers, so keep yours out of reach.
What if my retainer does not fit anymore?
If you have missed a night or two, you can usually keep wearing it as normal; if it is slightly tight, wear it more over the next few days as your teeth readjust. If you are not sure it fits properly, bring it in. In most cases a simple adjustment will do, but if it no longer fits well you will likely need a new one. Do not wait to get it checked.

Can I switch to wearing my retainer only at night? Yes, once your orthodontist confirms your teeth and bone have stabilized.
My retainer feels tight after a few days off. What do I do? Wear it more consistently for a few days; if it stays tight or hurts, call us.
