Getting braces is not as simple as bonding them to your teeth as they are. A few steps come first, starting with a thorough cleaning so there is a healthy surface to work with. In some cases, more preparation is needed, including a tooth extraction. It is not necessary for every patient, but some will need it. Here is what to know, from Dr. Amir Davoody at Davoody & Hablinski Orthodontics.
Common reasons for extraction
An orthodontist may recommend removing a tooth before braces when:
- A tooth is so damaged or unhealthy that it cannot be saved, even with root canal therapy.
- Teeth are too crowded to align well without creating space.
- Severe crowding or protrusion needs extra room, and extraction can help avoid jaw surgery in cases where surgery is not the preferred option.
Creating the right amount of space is often what allows the remaining teeth to move into a healthy, stable position.
What the process is like
If the tooth is healthy and has fully emerged from the gumline, it can usually be removed with a simple extraction. The provider uses a forceps-like tool to gently work the tooth back and forth until it loosens and comes free. Recovery is quick because no stitches are needed.
For a tooth that is broken, badly damaged, or impacted, a surgical extraction may be necessary. That is more involved, requires stitches, and has a longer recovery.
What happens next
Your orthodontist will wait until you have fully healed from the extraction before placing your braces, which may take a few weeks. That healing time helps your treatment start on a stable foundation.
Frequently asked questions
Does everyone need extractions before braces? No. Many patients do not. It is recommended only when crowding, damage, or specific bite problems call for it.
Is the extraction done by my orthodontist? Often a general dentist or oral surgeon performs the extraction, coordinated with your orthodontic plan.
How long until I can get braces after an extraction? Usually a few weeks, once the area has healed.
